The hi-vis you need depends on the road, the task and your risk assessment. For most street and road works, a long-sleeved EN ISO 20471 Class 3 jacket is the usual starting point, particularly when workers are outside the coned-off working space. Class 3 offers the highest level of visibility and is expected on motorways and other high-speed roads. EN ISO 20471 Class 2 may be acceptable for some lower-speed work if your risk assessment supports it.

Traffic management can take place on any type of road, and setting out or removing cones and signs brings workers close to live traffic. Hi-vis trousers can add further visibility, especially if carrying equipment could block the view of a jacket. Always check your risk assessment and any client or site rules before choosing garments.

Your risk assessment may also call for roadside workwear that meets EN 343, the standard for protection against rain. Combining EN 343 protection with EN ISO 20471 visibility helps keep out the wet while helping workers stand out to passing drivers.
